Quick answer
For small changes or a form without fillable fields, open the PDF in an editor, add text boxes where you need them, and cover old text with white-out before typing the correction. For rewriting paragraphs, convert the PDF to Word, edit there, and save it back as PDF. Free markup tools on Mac, iPhone and Windows handle simple text too.
PDFs are designed to look the same everywhere, which is exactly what makes them awkward to change. There's no cursor that lets you click into a sentence and retype it the way you would in a word processor. Still, most real-world edits fall into a few types, and each has a reliable method: filling in blanks, correcting a word or a date, adding a note, or rewriting whole sections.
Which method fits your edit
| What you need to do | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Type into a form that has no clickable fields | Add text boxes on the page | Fast and keeps the original layout |
| Fill in a form with fields | A form filler that detects fields | Values go into the real fields |
| Fix a typo, a date or a number | White-out plus new text on top | Small, invisible-looking change |
| Add notes, highlights, arrows | Annotation or markup tools | Doesn't touch the original content |
| Rewrite paragraphs, add a section | Convert to Word, edit, export to PDF | Text needs to reflow |
| Hide sensitive information | A dedicated redaction feature | Covering text doesn't remove it |
Why PDF text is hard to edit
Inside a PDF, text is stored as positioned pieces: a word or a few letters at exact coordinates on the page, in a specific font that may be embedded only partially. There are no paragraphs that reflow. Change one word to a longer one, and the following text doesn't move over; it simply overlaps. That's why most tools, ours included, work by adding new content on top rather than rewriting the original.
Step by step: edit a PDF with MyPDFDone
- 01Decide how much you need to changeA few words, a date or blank form lines can be done on the PDF itself. Whole paragraphs or reflowing text are easier in a Word conversion.
- 02Upload the PDF to Edit PDFOpen MyPDFDone's Edit PDF tool and drop your file on the upload box. The document opens in the editor in your browser.
- 03Add text where you need itChoose Text, click on the page where the words should go, type, and set the size and color. Use Check for tick boxes and the date tool for dates.
- 04Cover what should disappearTo replace a word, draw white-out over it, then type the new text on top. White-out hides text visually; it doesn't delete it from the file.
- 05Preview and downloadPress Done and check the free preview of every page. Download the edited PDF for $4.99, paid once.
Editing and the preview are free. If the result looks right, download it for a one-time $4.99, with no subscription. Files are deleted automatically 2 hours after upload.
What the editor can do
- Text: type anywhere on any page, in the size and color you choose.
- White-out: cover old text, lines or marks with a white box.
- Highlight and draw: mark passages or circle items.
- Images: add a logo, a stamp or a photo.
- Check marks and dates: for boxes and date lines on forms.
It doesn't rewrite existing text in place. That keeps the original layout intact, but it means bigger rewrites belong in Word.
Filling in a form that isn't fillable
Many official forms are scanned paper or a printed layout saved as PDF. Clicking on the lines does nothing because there are no fields. You don't need to print it:
- Open it in Fill PDF form or Edit PDF.
- Click at the start of each line and type your answer. Use a size close to the form's own text, often 10–12 points.
- Add check marks in the boxes that apply.
- Zoom into the preview to make sure entries sit on their lines and nothing overlaps.
If the form does have fields, Fill PDF form finds them, and you can type straight into them. To sign it afterwards, see how to sign a PDF online.
Free ways to add text on your device
Mac
Preview's Markup toolbar (the pen icon) has a Text tool: click Text, drag the box where you need it, and type. You can change the font and size. Preview also detects many fillable fields automatically. Choose File > Export as PDF to save a copy.
Windows
Microsoft Edge opens PDFs and has an "Add text" button and a drawing tool in its toolbar. It's enough for filling in a simple form. Save with Ctrl+S. For larger changes, Microsoft Word can open a PDF (File > Open) and convert it to an editable document; complex layouts may shift, so check it before you export it back.
iPhone and iPad
Open the PDF in the Files app, tap the Markup button, then the + button to add a text box or a signature. Drag the text box into place and type. Changes save to the file when you tap Done.
Android
Android has no built-in PDF editor. Some PDF viewer apps offer annotation; otherwise, a browser-based editor works from Chrome on your phone.
Rewriting larger sections: go through Word
If you need to rewrite paragraphs, add a section, or change a table, convert the PDF to a Word document with PDF to Word, make your changes, and export the result as a PDF again. The layout is preserved in most documents, and text reflows naturally as you edit. Our guide on converting PDF to Word without losing formatting explains what converts well and what to check.
Honest limits and caveats
- Changing a document someone else issued (a certificate, a bank statement, a signed contract) may be forgery. Edit only your own documents, or documents where your changes are expected, like filling in a form.
- Signed documents: if a PDF carries a certificate-based digital signature, any edit will show the signature as invalid.
- Fonts: added text uses a standard font; it won't always match the original typeface.
Final check
- Every added entry sits on its line and doesn't overlap printed text.
- Dates, amounts and names are correct.
- Nothing confidential is merely covered with white-out.
- You signed last, after all other edits.
- You kept the original, unedited file.
Frequently asked questions
Not in MyPDFDone yet. You can cover text with white-out and type new text on top, which works well for short corrections. To rewrite paragraphs, convert the PDF to Word, edit it, and export it back to PDF.
Many forms are simply printed pages saved as PDF, with no interactive fields. You can still fill them: open the file in Edit PDF or Fill PDF form and click anywhere on the page to add text and check marks.
No. It draws a white box over the content, but the text underneath can still be selected or extracted. Don't use it to hide sensitive data. Use a real redaction feature, or turn the page into an image and back into a PDF.
Added text uses a clean standard font, in the size and color you choose. It may not match the original typeface exactly. For short entries such as names, dates and amounts that's normal on filled-in forms.
A scan is an image, so its text can't be changed directly. You can still add text, white-out and check marks on top. To get editable text, convert it to Word; PDF to Word runs OCR on scanned pages automatically.
Yes. Sign PDF adds a drawn, typed or uploaded signature. Fill in and check everything first, and sign last.
